In our lovely Wirral studio we offer a wide range of weekly sewing classes and courses, personal sewing tuition and craft workshops. We are located in the centre of Heswall town in Wirral with easy transport links from Chester, Liverpool and Merseyside.
Why Learn to Sew?
Sewing is no longer the pastime reserved for granny and her treadle sewing machine! Thanks to tv shows such as the Great British Sewing Bee and Project Runway along with a multitude of inspirational social media influencers, there has never been a more exciting time to dust off your sewing machine.
An abundance of modern, independent pattern companies have emerged. Companies such as Collette, Sew Over It and Tilly and the Buttons are making patterns simpler to use, easier to sew and fit, and in stunning, on trend styles. Luxury fabric brands such as Liberty and Dashwood stay up to date with colours and prints from the classic to the quirky, while not scrimping on the quality so you know your garment will wear and wash well. Plus, the huge online sewing community is always there to keep you encouraged and inspired along your sewing journey.
You only have to browse the thousands of Pinterest boards dedicated to sewing and craft to see what you can accomplish when you learn to sew. You can decorate your home in beautiful fabrics that show off your personality; from cushions to lampshades, curtains to blinds, every room can have that personal, homely touch. You can dress yourself, your family (even the dog), in styles you love, that fit perfectly and are built to last.
In this fast paced, hectic world, taking up a creative hobby such as sewing has been proven to reduce stress, boost your mood and improve your confidence. There is no greater sense of accomplishment when someone compliments your outfit/ cushions/ curtains or quilt, than being able to say ‘I made that’!
What do we offer?
Whether you are a beginner who would love to learn to sew, a keen crafter looking for an inspirational new craft workshop, or an aspiring dressmaker hoping to take your garment making skills to the next level, we have something for everyone in our busy sewing class schedule. We hold our regular classes at different times throughout the year so that you can attend at a time convenient to you, whether that is during the day, evening or weekends.
We regularly research the industry trends to bring you the most up to date sewing techniques and inspirational classes and courses. We consider your sewing journey; progressing you from learning to use your sewing machine, to sharpening your dressmaking, tailoring, home sewing, or creative skills. We also offer workshops and courses in patchwork and quilting. Along with our regular classes, we offer many one-off and seasonal workshops throughout the year so you can learn to sew beautiful gifts and garments for family and friends.
We offer sewing lessons to children, teenagers and adults. Sewing lessons for children are often in the school holidays, and range from learning to use a sewing machine to cute crafts and hobby sewing such as personalised bunting or clothes for teddy. Our weekly after school sewing club for teens has four regular groups and a waiting list! If your teenager would love to fill their wardrobe with handmade garments, please contact us and we can provide further sewing club details.
Where should beginners start?
One of our most popular sewing classes is ‘Beginners Sewing Machine Skills’ and we have taught hundreds of students from around the Wirral, Merseyside and Liverpool to learn to sew using a sewing machine. It is incredible to see the things our early students are now creating from learning basic sewing machine skills.
We also offer beginners a four-week ‘Intro to Sewing’ course. This is designed to take you through all the basics and get you sewing zips, decorative stitches and basic dressmaking techniques.
What should you expect when you attend a workshop?
All of our sewing workshops are held in the upstairs studio of our Heswall shop. Our gorgeous studio is well lit, spacious and equipped with every tool you will need for your workshop. The individual tables are set up with our amazing Pfaff Ambition sewing machines so you don’t have to worry about bringing your own sewing machine to the class. If there are any additional materials for you to bring along, these will be specified on the website when you book your class. You can always contact us if you are unsure.
Our classes are generally limited to a maximum of eight people to ensure you get plenty of personal tuition and help. We aim to make them informative and fun, so you come away feeling confident and inspired. We often receive excellent feedback on our tutors, who are extremely well experienced in their area of expertise. Jane Gordon, our resident sewing tutor has a wealth of knowledge and experience, and a contagious enthusiasm for all things handmade.
We include refreshments with all of our sewing classes so you can learn to sew while enjoying a luxury tea, fresh coffee and a selection of homemade cake. Bliss!
Would you prefer a personal sewing lesson?
If you would prefer personal sewing tuition with our dressmaker, this is available on a one-to-one basis. This type of tuition may be ideal for you if you do not enjoy learning in a group setting, or if you would like to learn a technique not included in one of our classes or courses (such as a clothing alteration, tailoring or pattern adaptation). This lesson can be tailor-made to suit your needs – please telephone or email if you would like to have a chat about personal sewing tuition.
